Ruth´s record for the most homeruns in a season stood for 34 years - Roger Maris hit 61 in 1961. Maris´ record was broken in 1998 by Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and right after by Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs.

President John Kennedy sent US troops to force compliance with law. Three people died and fifty were injured in the rioting. On June 6, 1966, Meredith was shot while participating in a civil rights march at Mississippi.
